Dimensional tolerances and quality of stamped parts

The forming and processing method of obtaining the required shape and size of workpieces by applying external forces to plates, strips, pipes, and profiles through punches and molds, resulting in plastic deformation or separation. The resulting workpieces are stamped parts. Stamped parts are formed and processed by applying external forces on plates, strips, pipes, and profiles using a press and mold, resulting in plastic deformation or separation to obtain the desired shape and size of the workpiece (stamping part). Stamping and forging belong to plastic processing (also known as pressure processing), collectively known as forging. The stamping blanks are mainly hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates and strips.

Stamped parts have light weight, thin thickness, and good stiffness. Its dimensional tolerance is guaranteed by the mold, so its quality is stable and generally can be used without further mechanical cutting. The metal structure and mechanical properties of cold stamped parts are superior to the original billet, and the surface is smooth and beautiful. The tolerance level and surface condition of cold stamped parts are superior to those of hot stamped parts.

The large-scale stamping production of small and medium-sized parts generally uses composite molds or multi-station continuous molds. Centered around modern high-speed multi-station presses, equipped with strip uncoiling, straightening, finished product collection, transportation, mold library, and rapid mold changing devices, and controlled by computer programs, a highly productive fully automatic stamping production line can be formed. By using new mold materials and various surface treatment technologies to improve the mold structure, high-precision and long-life stamping molds can be obtained, thereby improving the quality of stamping parts and reducing the manufacturing cost of stamping parts.

The process and equipment of stamping production are constantly developing. In addition to the traditional use of presses and steel molds to manufacture stamping parts, various special stamping forming processes such as hydraulic forming, spinning forming, superplastic forming, explosive forming, electro-hydraulic forming, electromagnetic forming, etc. are also rapidly developing, raising the technical level of stamping to a new level. The special stamping forming process is particularly suitable for the production of multiple varieties of small and medium-sized batches (even dozens of pieces) of parts. For ordinary stamping processes, simple molds, low melting point alloy molds, group molds, and stamping flexible manufacturing systems can be used to organize stamping processing of multiple varieties of small and medium-sized batch parts.

In short, stamping has a series of advantages such as high productivity, low processing costs, high material utilization rate, simple operation, and easy implementation of mechanization and automation. By adopting composite processes such as stamping, welding, and bonding, the structure of the parts is more reasonable and the processing is more convenient. More complex structural components can be manufactured using simpler processes.
